Joselito Flores Castillo is a healer, a storyteller, a teacher, a dancer, a musician, a dynamic creative being. He is an intuitive healer who descends from a long line of curanderos and who grew up gay in a conservative Tex-Mex family.
Joselito was born in Lubbock, Texas in 1965. His mother and father were founding members of Rio Bravo, a well known Tex Mex band, and his sisters continue the tradition today. He grew up in Salt Lake City, studied first at Santa Barbara City University under the direction of Kay Fulton, and then at Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle.
He taught kindergarten for fourteen years, and has been an actor, choreographer, dancer and director in the Seattle area for the last 30 years. He has worked with many different organizations such as On the Boards, Velocity Dance Center, Annex Theater, and The Alice B Theater.
Joselito ran his dance studio, South Side Dance Force, from 1997-2016. For many years he was successfully involved in the competition scene but eventually became disillusioned with the competitive mentality. He decided to establish a new direction for the studio and refocused his love of dance towards inclusivity, and celebrating real diversity in bodies, in movement and in his students. South Side Dance Force became a safe space for dancers of all levels to explore and feel comfortable with movement. He created a curriculum that promotes connection through the body and is built on creativity, movement exploration, and strong foundational technique. He has also created and taught dance programs for local schools, daycares and theater programs.
Joselito created original work with his company modus dance(formerly SSSCo) from 2002-2016. His shows are dynamic, entertaining, and deeply personal. His art aims to reach each and every person in the audience on some level; for each person to recognize themselves somewhere in the work and experience a heartfelt connection with what is unfolding in front of them.
In 2016, Joselito completed his Life Coach training with Marla Williams and formally began his journey of being a coach and healer.
For Joselito, creativity is a lifestyle. He enjoys playing with various forms of media and is constantly capturing mundane moments to recycle into art. He has been an avid record collector his entire life and is a die-hard disco bunny. He is utterly devoted to his diva, the exquisite Ms. Connie Francis.
When not dancing and creating, Joselito enjoys his time cooking delicious vegetarian delights, spending time with Randy, his partner of 33 years, and spoiling their dog, Rupert the Basenji. He is currently working on self publishing a memoir of his childhood in Lubbock, Texas.
